2017 marks the 95th Anniversary of the Catastrophe of Smyrna, Asia Minor. September 1922 marks the culmination of the Christian Genocide in which 3.65 million people were killed in Asia Minor.
On Sunday 17th September at 9.00am, The Devine Liturgy (in Greek) will be celebrated at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, Edmonstone St. South Brisbane.
The service will include a Commemorative Service for the Christians who were killed in the Genocide and the martyrdom of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna.
The Asia Minor Greek Historical Association invites all Greek Associations to lay a wreath in memory of the Christians who lost their lives in the most tragic of circumstances during the years of the late 1800’s up to 1922, and honour the survivors who were to become refugees after the forced expulsion from the land of their ancestors.
At the conclusion of the liturgy, we move to the cenotaph outside the Church where a Trisagion (Memorial) Service will take place, followed by the placement of wreaths
Morning tea will follow in the Welfare Room in the Administration Building of the Greek Community of St. George.
