Outer Space Creative Hub: Introductory Forum

Brisbane City Council has identified a preferred tenant for the Creative Hub project on Montague Road. The successful proposal is actually very different from what council seemed to be imagining in its original descriptions of the project, and perhaps also diverges a lot from what most people would think of when they hear the term ‘creative hub’, but personally I think it has a lot of potential to be a really cool project.

The limitations of the building and the relatively small amount of funding that council is putting into the project mean a multi-disciplinary non-profit community arts centre of the kind that West End badly needs would be very difficult to sustain on this site without significantly more grant funding from other sources. So the successful applicants are primarily focussed on running the space as a contemporary arts gallery called ‘Outer Space’, with a mentorship program for up-and-coming artists and monthly live music events in the largest gallery space. There’s also another large meeting/event space that we as a community need to decide how best to make use of.

Anyone and everyone with an interest in West End’s arts scene is invited to come along to an introductory community forum to hear from the main organisers about their vision for the space, and to share your ideas about what else you’d like to see happen on the site and how we can make this into a place that the whole of West End feels excited about and proud of.

We’ll drag along a BBQ to pump out some free vego sausages, and maybe brew up a batch of chai as well. See you there hopefully!
