Creative Action Calling for Traffic Lights at Victoria-Montague

At 8am on Tuesday, 15 May, residents are organising a couple of creative actions outside the West End Aldi calling for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection of Victoria St and Montague Rd.

This intersection is adjacent to a busy supermarket, a childcare centre and a high-frequency bus stop and hundreds of people cross here each hour. Other options such as traffic islands or zebra crossings are not feasible due to the slope of the road, and will not improve accessibility for people with vision impairments or limited mobility.

We've had at least four large petitions submitted to the Lord Mayor regarding this intersection, and hundreds of residents have contacted council about it, but BCC is still prioritising traffic flow ahead of pedestrian safety. With the council budget on the horizon, this is a good time to draw a bit more media attention to this hazardous intersection and increase the pressure for traffic lights.

Please join us on the Tuesday morning to send a clear message to council. You can get involved in the various actions or just stand on the footpath and support.

This protest will cause slight delays to traffic, but will have the necessary permits and oversight from the police, so will be safe and legal. We would prefer it if we didn't have to organise protests like this, but it seems nothing else is getting the council's attention.

We previously requested lower speed limits along this stretch of Montague Rd but the council refused. You can read the details of that process at
